| you are are going to do a car-pc make it a laptop, i tried a dekstop pieced together in a miata and every bump you hit the desktop HDD skips. its not worth it, just spend the little extra for a laptop that works with a broken LCD aswell every time you pull the power the machine shuts down, my laptop runs on the battery for 15mins and then goes into standby i pick up everyones wireless free internet everywhere | |

| next install will be a high gain omni directional antenna. if it is hooked correctly to the wireless card and a good reception area i can pick up up-to 2miles of wireless networks. so if im driving through the city i can set it to auto connect to unencrypted networks and not loose an internet connection for more then 10sec the entire time im driving around | |

I built several Mini ATX carpcs. We did alot of testing on stuff like this. You can maintain a connection, but its not really usable while moving. Since your IP changes on a constant basis the downloads break, and then it doesn't ask for them again, you have to constantly refresh. We used huge Omni's, roof top sized stuff, and it just never worked out to be usable. Your way better off now to get a cellular card for your laptop. BTW we never ran hard drives, we swapped then out for USB flash drives. They never skip.

| yeah cause flash drives store like memory, instead of plates having to spool and the read and write heads scanning it pulls it like it does from memory and there is no lose of time
my HDD doesnt skip in a truck with -NO- shocks i was saying not to use desktop drives.. they are prone to skipping, in reality the desktop drive usually has 2-3 plates that it needs to spin at lets just say 7200rpm's, now if you spool up a laptop drive and a desktop drive then twist them in your hand the laptop drive holds less resistance just because of the plates being smaller. or if you want to bring it into physics we can do that lol
laptop drives are fine, just dont use them as drag blocks
spider13- you would find more room in the truck if you use Micro ATX boards and since you arent realy using the machine for anything micro would be fine
and i have already tested a 2mi omni with full success, for over a year being a gamer i couldnt afford internet in this crap hole they call syracuse, so i drove around all night playing guildwars, WoW, CS:S, BF2 u get the point

| Micro ATX is cool. But when we were doing it they were really only available with those stupid VIA processors. They were dragging to play video. So they really wouldn't keep up with what we were trying to do. They may have improved them alot, since I haven't messed with the car pc thing for about a year.
I just liked the fact that flash drive eliminated moving parts from the whole computer. I still think daily use of a hard drive in a car...let alone a slammed car will shorten its life greatly. Plus without a hard drive it let us run dead silent since we used big passive coolers.
Did you actually game while driving around? What did you use to maintain a connections?
