PostSubject: My new weekend cruiser   My new weekend cruiser EmptyMon Jun 16, 2008 9:57 pm

I picked up a 95 VW Cabrio about 2 weeks ago. So far i swapped my suspension out of my GTI into it, put on rims I had but never used yet, washed/waxes, cleaned up the interior a bit, and changed the steering wheel (ugly square airbag center) for the non-airbag nice leather wrapped one out of my GTI.

more changes to come as cash allows, trying to save up for a paint job (re-paint stock colour) late in the summer or this fall.

i did keep the hitch on all summer, haha. I tried to remove it but the mounting bolts are seized (broke a ratchet). Then i tried just pulling the attachment out of the receiver so at least it would just be the bar under the bumper.. that's also rusted solid. Broke a towstrap in a hilarious redneck attempt to yank it out with my yota.

The cab is in the bodyshop getting a fresh coat and some custom work now.

dunno when it will be done yet, I didn't give the guy a hard deadline.. no rush for me since it's winter up here, and I won't drive it again till spring. Hoping to get over to the shop soon to see the progress and take some pics though.

Here are some pics a local guy shot for me halfway through summer though...

so, went down to the body shop today to have a look. I should've called ahead to see if he was open or taking a holiday.. of course, he was closed, but I got this pic through the window in the shop door.

PostSubject: Re: My new weekend cruiser   My new weekend cruiser EmptyWed Jan 14, 2009 9:30 pm

So I actually got to see the car and talk to the guy a couple weeks back, of course this time I forgot to take pics though!

The car is coming along well, the sides and hood are in primer, it was in the middle of block sanding. The rear fenders are rolled and the shaving is done. The trailer hitch is off! I dropped off my new (used) front lip for him, so that will be fitted and painted. It's a deeper and more aggressive design than the stock lip, it matches the cabrio's rockers much better. And the front and rear lips and the rockers will be painted body colour.

Today I finally got some better pics and checked out the progress with the shop.

My new weekend cruiser 090117-bodyshop2
My new weekend cruiser 090117-bodyshop3
The shaving is done, the dent, scratch, minor rust & collision repair is done, and the car has gotten it's first coat of primer and block sanding. It's due for another coat of primer all over next and then more blocking.

The old windshield is out now and the windshield frame is completely rust free Smile

He also has my abt lip now (looks like this but that one isn't mine) but it was painted before with rubberized undercoating so it's being stripped and repainted before fitting. The front lip along with the rockers and rear valence will be body-colour.

I think he mixed the paint with more flake than OEM.. it is a metallic paint anyway, but wow.. it's ok, I love it!

And he cleaned/treated the top with some kind of vinyl care stuff for me when it was done, which I will have to find out the name of because the top is pretty much shining now.
